New Books from College Tutor
St Stephen’s House is pleased to welcome two new publications with contributions by Ian Boxall, Senior Tutor and New Testament Tutor.
New Perspectives on the Nativity, edited by Jeremy Corley (Continuum, 2009), presents a diverse collection of essays on the Gospel Infancy Narratives, with contributions from such scholars as Henry Wansbrough, Benedict Viviano, Warren Carter and Ann Loades. Ian Boxall’s contribution employs the tools of narrative criticism to offer a holistic reading of Luke’s birth narrative, highlighting the similarities to the insights of visual artists in previous centuries. Professor John Barclay of the University of Durham offers the following assessment of the volume: ‘This engaging collection of essays offers an excellent showcase of literary, theological and political readings of the birth narratives in Matthew and Luke, including studies in the history of reception. It ably demonstrates that when historical questions grow old, the texts prove fertile in every new ways. A great resource for many Christmases to come!’ More information available here.
Ian Boxall has also contributed the volume on Luke’s Gospel to a new series to be published by Alive Publishing in the Autumn, Take and Read: the Gospels. Designed for use by parish study groups, each volume is divided into twelve sessions, covering twelve separate passages from the gospel. It combines biblical text and commentary with material for reflection and prayer, including quotations from the Fathers and visual illustrations. Further information may be obtained from the series editor, Fr Adrian Graffy (adriangraffy@dioceseofbrentwood.org). Further information is available here here.
