Liturgical Life
The working day at the House begins and ends with prayer and worship in the
morning and evening offices. The Eucharist is celebrated daily in St John’s
Church with a sung Mass on feast days and a Sunday Eucharist which aims to
include the whole community and is followed by refreshments and a traditional
Sunday lunch. There is a college choir and a Junior Church meets every Sunday
during term time.
Regular in-house retreats are conducted in Advent and Holy Week (outside the university term) and the House welcomes a wide variety of visiting preachers. Members of staff are happy to put all students in touch with possible spiritual directors. Students who are ordinands are especially encouraged to have regular spiritual direction during their time at the House.
The
House is in close proximity to two Anglican religious communities, the Sisters
of the Love of God at Fairacres and the All Saints Sisters of the Poor at
All Saints’ Convent, as well as to the Roman Catholic Franciscan community
at Greyfriars. Good relations are enjoyed with these. There is a huge variety
of local churches and Christian groups.
Ordinands are expected to attend the Offices and certain celebrations of
the Eucharist. All members of the college are entitled to be allocated a place
in the House Chapel and are welcome to all the services.
